I would like to make a blog post about some misconceptions, firstly that G3 is always better than G2 and that green boundary locators are good enough.
I have a front end to fender transition here and it is G2, G3 and G4 respectively.
Looking at the visual curves you may be wondering to yourself which one looks better or not,
visual curves are a fantastic analysis tool … once you know what you’re looking at, not before that. So let’s put on the showroom shader!
What a difference! isn’t it?
Notice how G2 makes a harsh transition in the highlight, producing a noticeable wobble. this wobble however, is exacerbated when making it G3! this is very very wrong! we simply made a bad connection even worse, this is not the solution…at least not in this surface-set. Notice the G4 transition is what we are after, a very gentle and soft connection from front end to fender producing a highlight that is crisp and behaved.
If you look at the curvature combs, notice the transition is indeed G2, then direct modeled to G3 so the comb-plot is tangent continuous within, but the real beauty comes when the whole surface-set has the same curvature and rate of change of curvature. In fact there is fairly little rate of change at all, that’s what gives you the controlled highlight.
So that’s G3 is better than G2 shattered, now you can come to me and say “Kevin: so G4 is better than G3, right?” and I simply say: “not going there!” but let’s shatter the second misconception, that having green locator flags mean our transitions are smooth. In all of these, the G2/G3 and G4 are all green at curvature continuity. Look beyond continuity at those boundaries, it is a bit of a false hope!
